Use These Tactics To Free Up Closet Space After A Shopping Trip

Posted on

When you bring home a selection of new clothing from a shopping trip that took you to a few local clothing stores, you'll sometimes face the challenge of fitting your new articles into your closet. This is a sign that it's time to remove some of your current apparel in an effort to free up space. For many people, it can be a challenge to get rid of clothing, but your ability to buy new shirts, pants, and other items can be compromised if you don't have a suitable space to hang them. It's sensible to discard clothing that you seldom wear, but there are a number of simple tactics that you can use to identify things with which it's time to part.

Consider Shrinkage

If you're careful when you do the laundry, you should be able to prevent most of your articles of clothing from shrinking. However, it can be easy to leave a shirt or some pants that are already tight in the dryer for a full cycle, causing them to shrink by a small degree. One way to decide which clothing you should part with after you've bought a handful of new items at local clothing stores is to evaluate which items have shrunk. Shrunken clothing has the potential to not only be uncomfortable, but to also look awkward on your body.

Consider Styles

If you don't gain weight or act in a rough manner with your clothing, it can be easy to keep individual articles for years or even decades. Doing so, however, doesn't necessarily mean that they'll look good. As styles change, most people want to feel as though they're keeping up with at least some current trends. It's useful to consider what styles are popular today, and pull out your clothing that doesn't suit this sense of style. Skinny jeans are currently more hip than baggy jeans, so it may be time to find a new home for your baggy apparel.

Consider What's "You"

As people age and change, they may hold onto clothing that they feel is no longer "them." For example, if you were a little wild in your 20's but are considerably more modest now that you've hit your 30's, you might have some revealing clothing that you used to wear but that you'd never consider donning now. Go through your closet from one end to another and get rid of anything that doesn't accurately represent who you are at this stage of your life.
